Epic Road Trip : Hamilton Dry Goods, Sparta, TN.

W
hile Sandy was back in Brooklyn, handling the daily operations of both The Hill-Side and Hickoree's, Emil and I made a trip down south to Nashville to do some sight seeing, some honky-tonking and so Emil could do some fabric hunting for the Hill-Side.

Moving Pictures : The Hill-Side + "WA".

A well-made video for a good reason. Directed by Aaron Ekroth, my pals Sandy and Emil of The Hill-Side talk about the making of the "WA" handkerchief and their connection to cause. Made in limited numbers, all proceeds go directly to The International Rescue Committee (IRC). Areas of Japan remain in the delicate balance of recovery and agencies and relief funds remain critical. With a second run of only 100 produced, now's a good time to act. Available only at Hickoree's Hard Goods.

Good Day to Dye : The Hill-Side for Koninginnedag.

Koninginnedag, or Queen's Day, a national day of saamhorigheid, is being celebrated in the Netherlands today. Our man Sandy Corsillo from the Hill-Side is in Amsterdam and in preparation for his trip, hand-dyed Hill-Side white selvedge the traditional orange worn by revelers. Done on a recent warm spring day on the roof of Hickoree's HQ in Brooklyn. God Speed, Sandy.

Coming Attractions : The Hill-Side, Spring '11 Video.

Back in October of last year, the Corsillo brothers got some friends together, packed a few bags full of The Hill-Side's forthcoming Spring '11 line, enlisted the talent of our man, photographer Antony Crook and enjoyed cocktails and an incredible meal prepared by our friends at The Hope Street Supper Club. In addition to shooting the lookbook, which you'll see in a week or so, video was shot. Sandy provided a steady hand, pushing Antony on a skateboard used as a dolly. So without further ado, Secret Forts is stoked to present your first look at The Hill-Side Spring '11 lookbook video. Enjoy and look for Spring to start hitting stores sometime next week.

The Dirty Dozen: Q&A w/ The Hill-Side.

I met Emil and Sandy Corsillo, brothers, founders of The Hill-side and proprietors of Hickoree's Hard Goods, a year or so ago. I was told about the Hill-side by Ryan Huber of Context Clothing. I posted about them. Emil gave me a call. We all met up at the ACE after some thing one night. Became fast friends. So I thought, a year since first discovering the Hill-side, I would pay a visit, take the chance to catch up with them, see what's new and what's to come. Twelve Questions. Twelve answers. The Dirty Dozen.

The Map: UNIONMADE, SF CA.

I used to live in San Francisco, maybe 15 years ago or so. Having just made a brief trip back for the weekend, it was great to see a shop like UNIONMADE(become a fan on Facebook) filling a void in San Francisco's retail landscape.
If I had to stock my Secret Fort for a long winter, I wouldn't have to go much further than a stop into UNIONMADE. Focusing in on American Heritage products, UNIONMADE has opened only this past weekend at 493 Sanchez st. (@18th). Start with coffee from 4 Barrel and take a stroll over to 18th and up toward the Castro and take your time. There are great things along the way: Bi-Rite Creamery, Tartine Bakery, Delfina restaurant, Dolores Park...and once you get your fill of some of SF's edible best, make your way into UNIONMADE to cap it all off.
It was a real pleasure to meet and talk with Todd Barket, proprietor, about all of the last minute mayhem right up to the opening.
It's a warm place, with friends of Todd and Carl's dropping in to wish good luck and help out around the store. Being a bit of a furniture maker myself, UNIONMADE'S furnishings, handmade by Carl Chiara at their home up north on the Russian River and out of sustainably grown timber from a local lumber yard, nod respectfully to Donald Judd. And check out the vintage Pashley in the window.
The shop offers American goods of both new and old provenance. You'll find the likes of Filson travel bags, classic Woolrich shirtjacs, SNS Herning sweaters, Rogues Gallery flannels, Alden footwear(including a custom styles exclusively for UNIONMADE), Hill-side ties and scarfs to name a few with more to come. Newly opened, it's a place that will continue to evolve, though the foundation is seemingly all there.
Both Todd and Carl are the nicest of guys (with an extremely sweet, newly adopted Greyhound) and have a real handle on things there at UNIONMADE.
If you're in the area, make it a point to stop in, have a chat and take a look. Help support the independent retailers who are doing things right.
