Have you read anything by John Dos Passos? If you have patience for a little experimentation, the USA Trilogy is invigorating. JDP was buds with Hemingway; he was one of the writers about whom Ernest said to himself, 'that's NOT what I'm going to write like.' Interesting history and good stories, too.
