Spring Forward: Folk, SS10.

I recently had the chance to take a look at Folk's SS10 line.
Folk, started by Cathal McAteer back in 2001, has enjoyed a growing and intensely loyal following in the UK and in the past few seasons, is seeing the same thing happen here in the US. Available at both Hickoree's online(and presently at their pop up shop in Brooklyn. More on that later) as well as at Odin in NYC, Folk is rich in detail and bold in color and texture for SS10. As they state on their site, "
Folk’s about making clean, honest understated garments with a meticulous eye for colour, fabric selection and design detail. We create simple everyday clothing with subtle, innovative and sometimes playful detailing.
So take some time to get over to Odin(you know where) or my neck of the woods in Brooklyn
to Hickoree's pop up(439 Metropolitan Ave. Through January 31st) to have a look at Folk's FW09 line. And be patient, SS10 will be available soon enough at the above retailers as well as Bblessing, For The Greater Good, Douglas Fir, and C'H'C'M

This just looks seriously queer and clownish...

I have never owned anything from Folk, but love the fit from what I have tried on. Their details are intricate and fun. But...

Ulysees - On what evidence do you make this opinion that Folk is "shit"?

New Grass - I agree.

And Anonymous - If you don't have something nice to say at least have the balls to let us know who you are.

Great post James.

it looks so GOOD, it HURTS.

Shaun, what are you, the blog moderator? Folk is a poor attempt to mimic the aesthetics of past and current outdoor sporting companies. While their fits may be good, their image is horrible. The prints they use are awful Pendleton replications, and to be right up front, they've turned the outdoor appeal of the companies they mimic into a quasi-fashionista, feminine look.

Check it: in a year people will be looking for geometric patterns that are not plaid. And Folk will have been making their archive print shirts and lining their shit with the same fabric for, what, two years? That is respectable. I really think Folk has its priorities straight.

Although it should be said that their product photography on their website is reeeaaally lackluster.

I'm pretty sure Mitch and Ulysses don't have a ton of cred or knowledge about fashion - if the only limp kind of critiques you have are a semi-baseless Pendleton comparison (nothing like Pendleton, from palettes, to mood, to fit) or a site photo angle (who cares? I buy the clothes), you're not working with much.

I like Folk because I can't pinpoint the exact mix of all their influences. It's decidedly English to me, but definitely nods to their popularity in Japan with their fabric choices. The patterns are tough to pinpoint too, which I appreciate. Could be English, or anything else. My favorite thing about them is the off-kilter, small details, like buttons, tags, and palette choices. Lastly, I think the stuff is made pretty well, considering they are just finding their footing with a few seasons. There is trial and error with starting a label, and it seems like they're doing great so far considering. If you've ever been by the store or talked to Maggie or Cathal, they seem like really nice, supportive folks.

"Queer and clownish" to you, maybe, but I really think Folk stands out in a sea of people visiting the "dad" look, and makes the corny goofballs like Mitch and Ulysses (probably wearing APC new cures and desert boots, with an opening ceremony x pendleton bag, and thinking theyre original) super uncomfortable. Maybe with their own sexuality.

You guys have no idea. I have bought Folk clothing for years now and the quality and detailing is unparalleled. As the previous poster said, you only have to have a talk with Cathal (who still works the shop floor a couple of times a week) to realise his passion for sourcing the best materials and producing the best and most wearable clothes. It sits in line with other brands that focus on craft/heritage and not particularly fashion or the trends associated with it.
The clothes speak for themselves, pictures simply don't do them justice.

Nothing to see here ladies & gentlemen.

You are entirely correct all Folk clothing is rubbish.

Go and buy something else.

Your loss.

Oh yes, Lambs Conduit Street is top notch.
