Flahutes and Roleurs : The Rapha Continental Film.
“The greater the suffering, the greater the pleasure. That is nature’s payback to riders for the homage they pay her by suffering. Velvet pillows, safari parks, sunglasses; people have become woolly mice. They still have bodies that can walk for five days and four nights through a desert of snow, without food, but they accept praise for having taken a one-hour bicycle ride. ‘Good for you’. Instead of expressing their gratitude for the rain by getting wet, people walk around with umbrellas. Nature is an old lady with few friends these days, and those who wish to make use of her charms, she rewards passionately.” The ethos of glory through suffering from Tim Krabbe's seminal book, "The Rider". Read it then re-read it. Fall asleep it under your pillow. Get up early and go for a ride.

Moving Pictures : The Hill-Side + "WA".
A well-made video for a good reason. Directed by Aaron Ekroth, my pals Sandy and Emil of The Hill-Side talk about the making of the "WA" handkerchief and their connection to cause. Made in limited numbers, all proceeds go directly to The International Rescue Committee (IRC). Areas of Japan remain in the delicate balance of recovery and agencies and relief funds remain critical. With a second run of only 100 produced, now's a good time to act. Available only at Hickoree's Hard Goods.
Field Report : UNIONMADE, Santa Monica, CA.
Just back from a quick trip out to LA and while there, I had the chance to get out to UNIONMADE's newly opened outpost within the red barn-like Brentwood Country Mart.
Opened in 1948, the Brentwood Country Mart has been a mainstay for west siders for decades. More recently, along with the likes of the shoe repair shop, Reddi Chick and Sweet Rose's, add to that list shops like Monocle, Turpan and now UNIONMADE.

The Crown Life : Big Boi.
I have to hand it to my oldest pals over at Greenpoint Pictures for putting this together. Director Michael Kuhn and I spent the summer of '94 in Cincinnati absolutely wearing out the SouthernPlayalistic cassette. All these years later, he's spending weeks at a time up close and personal with Big Boi and the results look to be rather interesting.

Of Note : Hungry Ghost, Food + Travel.
Leave it to a photographer to start something like Hungry Ghost. Every photo, every post either makes you want to cook, eat, travel and/or eat more. Andrea Gentl, photographer(Gentl + Hyers), traveler, food lover has started the site Hungry Ghost that, not unlike another Secret Forts fave(and coincidentally another photographer's site, The William Brown Project) focuses on the simple joys in life; good food made by hand, travel, and all of it shot wonderfully.
