First Look: Freemans Sporting Club, Bleeker st, NYC.
Among the list of other projects Taavo and co are working on these days, open for business just today, is the west village(Bleeker @ Christopher st.)FSC outpost. Boxes were still being unpacked, mirrors installed, SS10 arranged and hung upon my visit to see the fellas and have a look around. Residing in a former bodega shuttered for the past six years, the space was gutted, freezers removed, years of neglect attended to and left relatively raw save for some painting and refinishing. Ultimately, it's a different shop than the original Rivington st. location with its own feel. Lighter and airier, it's corner locale lends two walls to mostly windows and plenty of sunlight. But at heart, its all FSC; vintage and salvaged lighting, tables and vitrines, the case work done by Taavo and co themselves.
It's a work in progress as of now, however, the Spring arrivals are in and look really good(see photos for evidence). Some stand outs are the light weight waxed cotton tab collar jacket, the indigo-dyed Japanese denim suiting(washed down for the perfect summer suit feel), the usual perfect plaid summer weight bd's, chambray and light weight 5 pocket trousers. Some new Quoddy + FSC boat shoes and chukkas, ML Brown belts in an assortment of dope colors, PF Flyers windjammer sneakers and billykirk straw trilbies and bank bags.
In the near future, FSC west plans on adding in a curated offering of outdoor necessities as well as becoming the manhattan outpost for Blue Bottle Coffee(the only other being 160 Berry (@N. 5th) in Brooklyn), complete with a take out window on Bleeker. At the rear of the shop, up a few steps, will be an on site tailor tending to alterations and some of the steps in the made to measure process.
It's gonna be an interesting and busy summer for FSC, with the new site ready to relaunch in May and a spate of other projects on deck. Stay tuned. Now get over to Bleeker and welcome them to the neighborhood.
